Are you ready for the most exciting Week of Science?

Information from the SSS Division

Artemi Cerdà
President of the SSS Division of EGU

Dear colleagues:
The EGU General Assembly will start soon. One week time.
This message is to inform you about the activities we are developing at the Soil System Sciences Division during the EGU General Assembly 2013.

I wish to thank all conveners and authors for their contribution to a successful meeting. One more year we are increasing the number of abstracts submitted to the SSS Division and we are now the fourth division with more than 1000 abstracts submitted to our division. You can find all the information here.

I will give you more information about the organization of the Soil System Science Division and Scientific Program for EGU 2013 at the Division Meeting that will take place on Thursday, April 11th, from 12:15 to 13:15, in Room B6 (map). Bring your ideas for the EGU 2014 General Assembly. This is the main meeting for bringing forward new ideas to the organization of the SSS Division (free lunch buffet with sandwiches and soft drinks will be served).

This will be also the time for the Oustanding poster awards, Young outstanding scientist award (Raul Zornoza), and many other ceremonies to celebrate that Soil Sciences are more and more visible at the EGU General Assembly and in the world of Geosciences. We will reorganize also the internal organization of the SSS Division. Please bring your new ideas.
You can reach me anytime during the congress, but if you wish to have a quite talk with me (and some refreshments) you can join me Monday April 8th from 16:30 to 17:15 in the EGU Booth (hall X at the poster area, map) during the “Meet the EGU Division President of Soil System Sciences”. Do not hesitate to contact me at

During next week, a milestone for all the soil scientists will be the Philippe Duchaufour medal lecture. I am very happy to invite you to the Duchaufour Medal Lecture by William Shotyk (Bocock Chair for Agriculture and the Environment, University of Alberta) next Tuesday, April 9th 2013 at room B9, 19:00 – 20:00 h (map). Prior to the reception will be a reception offered by John Wiley and the Land Degradation and Development journal. Do not miss this celebration of a successful scientific career.

Remember that the “official” EGU Award Ceremony will take place on Wednesday April 10th 2013 (Red level, second floor, Room R1; map) from 17:30 to 20:00 h. This ceremony will be very special this year for all the members of the SSS Division as our past-president, Teodoro Miano, has been awarded with the Union Service Award Medal, which is the highest recognition to the contribution to the European Geosciences Union (congratulations, Teodoro).

The opening ceremony of the EGU 2013 will take place next Sunday from 18:00 to 20:30 (Green level, first floor; map). I hope to see you there to have some drinks and exchange new ideas for our Division and Union. The Convener reception will take place on Friday 12th at 19:00. Remember that the EGU plenary meeting will take place on Monday April 8th from 12:15 to 13:15 h (Red Level, second floor, Room R1; map). There you will be informed about the finances, new projects and the changes and progress of new ideas within the EGU.

As every year, we are planning to organize a dinner (Soil Erosion Dinner) next Wednesday April 11th 2013, but we could not find the right Restaurant. I will keep you informed about the progress in this business that is kindly managed by Manuel Seeger and Agata Novara.
